The “spirits of wild sense” of Richmond Park

Lightfoot and swift” (photo by author)

The website warns visitors to be aware of their surroundings. Getting caught between two rutting stags ain’t no joke.

But on the day we go, the deer in Richmond Park are soaking up the feeble spring sun just like everybody else. Instead of wild animals to keep away from, they’re John Drinkwater’s “beautiful flocks of the mind,” “treading as in jungles free leopards do/printless as evelight, instant as dew”.

And so, softly and quietly we step away, leaving the fallow deer dwelling shyly in their herding.
