The short answer is that the other guys sounded too American. I think that at least two of them may have been American. The irony is that when I read English in uni, it was American English I studied, but, I then relocated to Blighty. And part of my identity in the last 25 years and counting, is as a UK-based immigrant. So, the narrator's accent had to be British. :-)
