The issue is nuance and emphasis. Each of these words brings something different to the game. :-)

Don’t go wild with your question tags if you give yourself permission to use “asked.” (Questioned. Inquired. Interrogated. Quizzed.) It can be the same slippery slope as using your thesaurus for “said” replacements, if you let it.
