Mate, Syd turned up all of a sudden during one of the recording sessions. The band freaked out completely because from the svelte, dandy-like figure who masterminded Floyd’s early success they now had in front of him an overweight, pot-bellied geezer. Gilmour’s solos on “Shine On…” might be one of rock’n’roll’s best guitar moments ever. Wish You Were Here signalled the beginning of the end for Floyd.
