Iris, I think it’s deplorable and unjustifiable what happened to you. I’m sorry for what you experienced.

At the same time the men (I’m thinking they were all men, correct meif I’m wrong) who insulted you HAPPENED to be African refugees. They didn’t call you those names BECAUSE they were African refugees. There’s no causal link between the person’s origin and the insult. As a German, you probably know a lot about stereotypes and how hard it is to shake them off.

In George Floyd’s case, he wasn’t just murdered by a cop but by a system. That’s what’s made this situation worse. He is the latest in along list of black, mainly men (although there are a few women, too) who are seen as nothing more than cannon fodder, beasts and, above all, invisible people.
