Indeed. I, too, had a similar reaction the first time I wrote a cheque. My ex-wife insisted that I write the word "only" at the end. To this day I wonder what would have happened if I'd dispensed with tradition and written just the figure minus the adverb. Would I live in penury now? Cheated of thousands of pounds, one penny at a time? :-D
