In an Edith Wharton novel, characters like Jackson’s would have been punished, and in one of Jane Austen’s, skewered with her acerbic wit. In Pineapple Street they receive, ultimately, sympathy. Given what Jackson tells us about them, sympathy is the last thing they deserve.
